Vietnam’s railway system is experiencing an extraordinary boom this summer, especially on routes connecting the capital city of Hanoi with major tourist destinations in the country’s central and southern regions. With sleeper compartments rapidly selling out—particularly on weekends—rail travel is once again capturing the imagination of Vietnamese families and domestic tourists.

In what many industry analysts are calling a tourism revival on tracks, train tickets for destinations such as Da Nang, Nghe An, and Quang Binh Province are in extremely high demand. Passengers trying to book a comfortable sleeper berth often find themselves facing limited or no availability, even when trying to reserve several days in advance.

Thu Minh, a Hanoi resident, recently attempted to book weekend train tickets for her family to Da Nang City. However, she was surprised to find that nearly all the trains were sold out. Of the nine options available, just two berths remained on train SE17, while SE11 had only three left—highlighting a broader trend affecting the entire rail network.

According to the Vietnam Railways Corporation, this surge in bookings is not limited to isolated routes. Trains traveling between Hanoi and numerous provinces in central and southern Vietnam are witnessing near-full occupancy on weekends throughout June. Their online ticketing platform reflects minimal availability, particularly for high-demand sleeper cabins.

Summer Bookings Soar Amid Better Pricing and Services

A spokesperson from the Railway Transport Joint Stock Company revealed that more than six hundred twenty thousand tickets had already been sold this summer season—a figure that is projected to grow by eight to ten percent over last year’s numbers. The upward trend is expected to continue as Vietnam’s peak vacation season enters full swing.

One of the driving forces behind the rise in train travel is Vietnam Railways’ strategic focus on affordability and convenience. Families, in particular, are benefiting from well-structured fare packages that include significant group discounts of up to fifteen percent. Children under six years of age are allowed to travel free, making train travel a budget-friendly option for parents planning holidays with young kids.

Moreover, train travel offers an added layer of comfort that road or air transport often lacks, especially for families. New upgrades to train interiors include air-conditioned sleeper cabins, cleaner facilities, more spacious berths, and onboard dining. These improvements have helped modernize Vietnam’s rail infrastructure and align it more closely with traveler expectations in the post-pandemic era.

Scenic Journeys Driving Demand

Beyond cost and convenience, the allure of Vietnam’s natural beauty is playing a central role in the growing demand. Many trains traveling from Hanoi to destinations like Da Nang or Hue cut through some of the country’s most breathtaking scenery—coastal stretches, verdant forests, and mountain passes. These immersive, picturesque journeys are increasingly being seen as a part of the holiday experience itself, not just a means of transportation.

Even the higher-end sleeper trains operating on the Hanoi–Da Nang route are frequently sold out, despite one-way tickets for luxury cabins costing as much as VND1.3 million (roughly US$50). Passengers seem more than willing to pay the premium for an elevated, scenic journey that blends comfort with adventure.

Network Expansion and International Links

To cope with the uptick in travelers, Vietnam Railways has added more trains to key routes. The Hanoi–Hai Phong City corridor now operates additional trains to meet weekend demand. In the country’s south-central region, the rail connection between Ninh Thuan Province and Da Lat—one of Vietnam’s premier highland getaways—has seen its train frequency doubled, with a total of six trains now serving the route.

International travelers are not being left out of this expansion either. Trains between Hanoi and Beijing have been upgraded to operate daily, providing greater accessibility for travelers commuting between Vietnam and China. This move is expected to stimulate cross-border tourism and reinforce Vietnam’s growing role as a regional travel hub.
